Originally, a “notebook” referred to a small booklet used for recording various kinds of information. Before humans invented writing, people often employed knotted cords to record numbers or events and convey certain meanings. As evidenced by artifacts left over from primitive societies—such as drawings, cord patterns on pottery, and clay net weights—we can see that knot-tying for record-keeping (and counting) was one of the widely used methods of documentation among early human ancestors.

Notebooks come in a wide variety of types, and their covers are commonly made from materials such as genuine leather, faux leather (PU), leatherette, PP, fabric, and metal. Binding styles include: softcover notebooks, spiral-bound notebooks, ring-bound notebooks, and hardcover notebooks.
